Evaluations (Not Tryouts)

Here at the Green Bay Chilis, we do things differently! We do it #ChilisStyle

What that means is that instead of having "TryOuts", we have "Evaluations". Tryouts are typically what you think of when coaches/organizations are trying to make the best team possible to go win championships. Because winning isn't the primary focus for Chilis, we run evaluations to get an idea of where all of our skaters are in their development and try to provide that information to you, the skater and adult! We also use that information when making teams or inviting players to play on teams at times.

YES!!! Your skater can be evaluated EVEN IF they don't intend to play on a team!!!

Making Teams

Step 1

  1. Player arrives at evaluations
  2. Gets a colored pinnie
  3. Get ready in locker room

Step 2

  1. Skater runs the drills and participates
  2. Evaluators score each skater on a variety of different areas
  3. Scores from all coaches are combined

Step 3

Scores are put into a database to be utilized in:

  • making teams so players play with like ability
  • helping outside teams find comparable skaters if one of their players is injured
  • recognizing what areas players need to improve the most so clinics can be made

Step 4

  • Skater will receive scores to show them which areas are their strengths & areas to improve
  • This will take a while to send out to everyone. Rest assured, I'll get it to you as quickly as possible!

For those of you that know me, you know that I am open and honest when it comes to this area. My kids are "bubble kids" in my opinion and could go either way depending on the day! So allow me to say this clearly in writing, we will be ranking the skaters based on their scores. That does NOT mean that lines will and/or won't be made and that those lines (if made) won't be ignored if coaches feel like it is best. We really do have the best interest of the player in mind first, and team second!

Invite Only

Some teams have been playing together for years. They want to stay together and are only looking for a few players. This will be communicated to the families and skaters ahead of time.

Open Tournaments

  1. Coaches will sign up for which tournaments they are able to attend.
  2. List of those tournaments shared with the skater/families to sign up for.

Decisions Made

  1. We look at the score of the coach's skater
  2. We then look to see who else is interested in attending that tournament
  3. Then we try and find a group of skaters with like abilities to be a team.

What That Means Is

  • The top skater will only play with other top players and vice-versa
  • A "bubble kid" could be playing up on a team or could be the best on another team.
  • Some teams might have more or less players depending on who is interested and their score ability.
  • Teams could have different players week to week!

Mission Statement, Goal, & Promise

Mission Statement: To Help All Skaters Find Opportunities to Play Hockey All Year Long!

Goal: Find a team for every skater to play on... whenever they want!

Promise: I will do EVERYTHING in my power to help your skater find opportunities and be on a team. However if my skater is at the top of the score card and players with similar abilities don't have an interest in playing that weekend, then unfortunately there isn't a team available for my skater. It wouldn't be fair for my skater to play at a level they didn't belong, it wouldn't be fair for the teammates working to improve their skills, and it wouldn't be fair for the opponents.
